What Is Precipitation? How to Read the % and Plan Around It

Forecasts show a percentage and a millimetre figure. Most people only look at one. Here’s what both actually mean — and how to use them together to make better decisions outdoors.

Precipitation is any form of water that falls from the atmosphere to the ground. That includes rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, and hail — all different in form, but all measured and forecast the same way. What the Percentage Actually Means

The precipitation percentage in a forecast is one of the most misread numbers in weather. A 40% chance of rain does not mean it will rain for 40% of the day, or that 40% of the area will get wet.

It means: given current atmospheric conditions, there is a 40% probability that at least some measurable precipitation will fall somewhere in the forecast area during that period. It is a statement of likelihood, not duration or coverage.

What the Millimetre Figure Tells You

The percentage tells you the likelihood of rain. The millimetre figure tells you how much. These two numbers together are far more useful than either on its own.

One millimetre of rainfall means one litre of water has fallen per square metre of ground. In practical terms:

Key Distinction

A 70% chance of 0.5mm is a brief passing shower. A 70% chance of 25mm is a day-ruining downpour. Always read both numbers together.

Why the Same Amount of Rain Feels Different

Rainfall doesn’t happen in isolation. The same 5mm of rain lands very differently depending on what else is happening with the weather.

Temperature — 5mm of rain at 25°C is an inconvenience. The same amount at 8°C with strong wind is genuinely unpleasant and requires proper waterproofing and layers.

Humidity — in a high-humidity environment, wet clothing takes far longer to dry and the combination of damp air and wet skin makes the temperature feel much lower than it is. The feels-like temperature on a rainy, humid day is often several degrees colder than the air temperature reading.

Hiking and outdoor tours: Check both the mm total and the hourly timing. A 15mm day with all rain falling between 6–8am and clear skies by 9am is very different from 15mm spread evenly through the day. Trails can also become dangerous after heavy rainfall even once the rain has stopped.

City sightseeing: Light rain rarely ruins a city day — most attractions are indoors and good waterproof footwear handles the rest. Heavy rain with flooding is a different matter, particularly in cities with poor drainage or those prone to flash floods.

Tropical destinations: Wet season rain in tropical regions often follows a predictable pattern — clear mornings, heavy afternoon downpours lasting 1–2 hours, then clearing.
