What Is Dew Point? The Number That Tells You How Muggy It’ll Feel

Dew point is the most honest number in a weather forecast — and the one most people never check. It tells you, plainly, how muggy the air will actually feel, in a way that relative humidity often hides.

Ask most people how humid it is and they’ll quote the relative humidity: “80 percent.” But that figure can mean a crisp autumn morning or a tropical sauna, depending on the temperature. Dew point cuts through the confusion. It is a single, absolute measure of how much moisture is in the air — and once you learn to read it, you’ll never be surprised by sticky weather again.

What Is Dew Point?

The dew point is the temperature to which air must cool for the water vapour in it to condense into liquid — the point at which dew forms on the grass, mist appears over a field, or condensation beads on a cold glass. The higher the dew point, the more moisture the air is holding. A dew point of 5°C / 41°F means very dry air; a dew point of 24°C / 75°F means the air is heavy with moisture and will feel oppressive.

Crucially, dew point is an absolute measure — it doesn’t change just because the temperature does. That’s what makes it so much more useful than the percentage everyone quotes.

Dew Point vs Relative Humidity

This is the heart of it. Relative humidity tells you how full the air is relative to how much it could hold at that temperature — and warm air can hold far more moisture than cold air. So 90 percent humidity on a cold 5°C / 41°F morning is barely damp, while 60 percent humidity on a hot 32°C / 90°F afternoon is drenching. Same-looking numbers, opposite feelings.

Dew point sidesteps that trap. Because it measures the actual moisture content, a dew point of 22°C / 72°F feels muggy whether the air temperature is 25°C or 35°C. It is the number that tracks how the air will feel — which is exactly why it drives the “feels like” temperature more than humidity does.

Why Dew Point Matters for Travellers

Two destinations can share the same daytime high and feel completely different, and dew point is usually why. Tropical hubs sit at high dew points for much of the year — step off a plane in Bali or Singapore and it’s the dew point, often above 24°C / 75°F, that hits you as a wall of mugginess, not the thermometer reading. A dry-heat city at the same temperature but a low dew point feels far more bearable. If you tend to wilt in humidity, the dew point — not the relative humidity percentage — is the figure to check before you book.

Dew Point, Dew and Fog

The name is literal. When the air cools overnight to its dew point, moisture condenses out — as dew on the ground, or as fog and mist when it happens in the air itself. That’s why clear, calm nights often end in a dewy dawn or a valley full of fog: the temperature has fallen to meet the dew point. The closer the air temperature sits to the dew point, the more likely mist, fog and heavy morning damp become.

Relative humidity is the figure everyone quotes, but dew point is the one that actually answers the question you care about: will it feel sticky?
