A single scorching beach day is a holiday. A heatwave is something else entirely — and travellers routinely underestimate it, because it doesn’t look dramatic. The sky is just blue, the way it was yesterday. But the danger of a heatwave isn’t any one afternoon; it’s the heat that piles up, day after day, and never fully lets go at night.
If you’re travelling through Europe, Asia or North America in summer, knowing what a heatwave actually is — and how your body copes with one — can be the difference between a great trip and a hospital visit. Here’s what’s really going on, and how to move through one safely.
A Heatwave Isn’t Just “a Very Hot Day”
There’s no single global temperature that defines a heatwave. The World Meteorological Organization and WHO describe it as a marked, unusual period of hot weather lasting at least two to three consecutive days and nights, judged against what’s normal for that place. That’s why 30°C is an ordinary summer day in Seville but a genuine heatwave in London or Stockholm — it’s relative to local climate, not an absolute number.
Two features separate a heatwave from a hot spell: it’s sustained (the heat accumulates faster than your body can shed it), and it’s defined as much by the nights as the days.
Why Hot Nights Are the Real Danger
This is the part almost everyone misses. Night is when your body is supposed to recover — your core temperature drops, your cardiovascular system rests, and the strain of a hot day eases off. During a heatwave, that recovery window closes. Meteorologists use the term “tropical night” for a night that doesn’t fall below 20°C (68°F), and they’re a hallmark of a serious heatwave, especially in cities where concrete radiates stored heat back after dark.
The upshot is counter-intuitive: the overnight minimum often tells you more about health risk than the afternoon peak. A day that hits 38°C but cools to 18°C overnight is far safer than one that reaches 36°C and never drops below 25°C — because in the second case, your body never gets a break. For a traveller, that means an un-air-conditioned room on night three of a heatwave is a real risk, not just an uncomfortable one. This connects to why humidity makes heat so much worse — when the air is muggy, sweat can’t evaporate, and your main cooling system starts to fail (the same reason the “feels like” temperature can run well above the number on the forecast).
What Causes One
Heatwaves are usually driven by a large, slow-moving area of high pressure that parks over a region and won’t budge — sometimes locked in place by an atmospheric “blocking” pattern. The high pressure sinks warm air, clears the clouds, and lets the sun bake the ground day after day, with each day starting warmer than the last. That “stuck” quality is exactly why heatwaves last: nothing is moving the hot air along.
Heat Exhaustion vs Heatstroke — Know the Difference
The single most useful thing a traveller can carry into a heatwave is the ability to tell these two apart. One you can handle where you are; the other is a race against the clock.

The dividing line is simple: does the person improve with cooling and rest within about 30 minutes? If yes, it was heat exhaustion. If they’re not improving — or showing confusion, agitation or collapse — treat it as heatstroke and call your local emergency number (999 in the UK, 112 across the EU, 911 in the US). When in doubt, cool them and call. Don’t try to diagnose which it is.
Who’s Most at Risk
It’s a myth that only the frail or elderly need to worry. Heat can affect anyone if it’s extreme enough for long enough — but older adults, young children, pregnant travellers, people with heart or breathing conditions, and anyone doing hard physical activity (that all-day walking tour) are more vulnerable and should be more cautious.
How to Travel Safely Through a Heatwave
- Reshape your day around the heat. Do sightseeing early or late; treat roughly 11am–4pm as downtime. The midday siesta in hot countries exists for a reason — copy it.
- Hydrate before you’re thirsty, and go easy on alcohol and caffeine, which worsen dehydration. Carry water everywhere.
- Book a room with reliable air conditioning or good ventilation during a heatwave — given the tropical-night problem, where you sleep matters as much as shade during the day.

- Check for official heat alerts. Many countries issue amber/red heat warnings (the UK’s Heat-Health Alerts, Europe’s national systems) — check them the way you’d check rain, and adjust plans on red days.
- Build in slower days. Because heat is cumulative, back-to-back big days in a heatwave wear you down; a rest day in the cool is a safety measure, not lost time.

During a heatwave, judge your risk by the overnight low, not just the daytime high — if the forecast shows nights staying above ~20°C, your body won’t be recovering, so be extra conservative with midday activity and prioritise a cool place to sleep. And learn the one rule that matters: if someone in the heat becomes confused or stops making sense, that’s heatstroke, not tiredness — call emergency services straight away.
